Wilpattu National Park is on the west coast of the island, close to the historical city of Anuradhapura. It is both the largest and the oldest National Park in Sri Lanka. It gained popularity due to the high prevalence of Sri Lankan leopards and is still regarded as one of the best places to go to spot a leopard in its natural habitat. It is also home to a diverse range of wildlife which includes the highly threatened Sri Lankan sloth bear as well as the Sri Lankan elephant. Wilpattu was declared a wildlife sanctuary on the year 1905. On 25th February 1938, the sanctuary was elevated to the status of National Wildlife Park. On 7th November 1947, the northern area of Wilpattu was declared as Wilpattu North Sanctuary.
The best way to visit the site is by jeep safari preferably between February to October. Wilpattu Safari Camp is nestled in five acres of wooded forest, tucked between seasonal village rice fields and the Wilpattu National Park. Tents are sited among the shade of trees, providing shelter and cooling comfort. Not a single tree was cut in setting up the campsite. We are located less than 10 minutes from the park entrance.
On completion of this tour, you will be driven back to your hotel or Katunayake International Airport for Departure.
